A match where both sides had their spells of possession and pressure, ended all square when Barnoldswick Town equalised with nearly the last kick of the match.
After last week’s heroics at leaders West End, this was a strangely subdued performance by Celtic who lead three times, but despite having other decent chances, they couldn’t kill off a determined Barnoldswick side.
After a cat-and-mouse start to the game, Celtic took the lead on twenty minutes. Declan Pinder ran in from the right and his shot was saved by the keeper, but Declan won the ball from the rebound it fell nicely for top-scorer Rob Lawless, making his last appearance until the New Year, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Five minutes later it was 1-1. A ball from the left was played into the Celtic box and Thomas “Tank” Farthing won the ball but it fell to the Town striker who stroked the ball into an unguarded net.
Celtic regained the lead on 35 minutes. A great cross from the left beat Town’s defence and Iain Ross, running in from the right, hit a superb right foot volley to give the keeper no chance.
Town equalised just before half-time with a free kick from just outside the box. The ball just seemed to go through Trawden’s defence like a knife through butter and ended up in the corner of the net! A really soft goal to concede.
Half-time: Celtic 2 - 2 Town
Celtic were now playing with the cold wind behind them, and five minutes in they went 3-2 up with a great goal by Iain Ross. He found himself on the edge of the Town area and let fly with his left foot. The keeper was rooted to the ground as the ball hit the top corner.
Rob Lawless then had a great chance to make it 4-2. He ran onto a great ball by Phil Shaw, but the keeper made a good save. Rob chased the ball and tried to chip the keeper with his left foot, but the ball went agonisingly over the bar.
The rest of the half was pretty even, Town having the better of the possession but
Celtic seemed to create the better chances.
Time was ticking away when Celtic lost possession in midfield. Town broke quickly
and a cross from the right found two of their strikers in acres of space. The shot
hit the roof of the net to give keeper Simon Lewis no chance as Barnoldswick came
from behind for the third time.
