31st August 2006 Trawden Celtic 4 - 0 Brierfield Celtic
Trawden Celtic Under 17’s demolished “bogey” side Brierfield Celtic in a one-sided match at the Rec.
Brierfield had beaten Trawden 3-0 in May of this year to deny them the League Title, and to rub salt in the wounds, Spencer Jordan and Liam Britton, Trawden's star midfielder's last year, had joined Brierfield in pre-season.
Trawden had four players making their debuts. Old boys Simon Lewis (defence) and Rob Lawless (striker) were joined by Jamie Holmes (defence) and James Parker (striker).
Captain Callum Whitfield and striker Phil Shaw filled the midfield void vacated by Messrs. Jordan and Britton.
Trawden were fast out of the blocks and Brierfield didn’t know what had hit them. Rob Lawless making the most of a lucky ricochet to put Trawden 1-0 up after five minutes.
Four minutes later it was 2-0. Phil Shaw making the most of a mix-up in the box to lash the ball in from close range.
It was all Trawden with Brierfield relying on breakaways, but Trawden ‘keeper Ben Gorman was too quick for the Brierfield strikers and swept up every punt forward.
Just before half-time came the best goal of the match. A great right-wing cross was met with a brilliant header by Rob Lawless with the Brierfield keeper producing a great save. Unfortunately for him the ball came straight back to Rob who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Half-time: Trawden 3 - 0 Brierfield.
Five minutes into the second half Brierfield had a man sent off for threatening behaviour, making their job even harder.
The rain was driving down and Trawden made a few substitutions, and with ten minutes to go they made it 4-0. Iain Ross chased a long ball and after a tussle with a defender smashed the ball past the keeper.
Brierfield then had their only two shots on target, but Ben Gorman produced great saves to keep a clean sheet.
A great start for Trawden with every single player having an excellent game.
Man of the Match was: Callum Whitfield
