Bottom of the table Ighten Leigh made Trawden Celtic fight all the way for the three points
With top scorer Rob Lawless suspended and Iain Ross in Manchester, Celtic had to make changes to the side that conceded a last minute equaliser to Barnoldswick Town last week.
Captain and centre-half Callum Whitfield partnered Thomas ‘Nelly’ Ellacott up front while Phil Shaw played on the right. Chris Dodd played at centre-half with Jamie Holmes.
The first 15 minutes saw Celtic with plenty of possession but unable to break down Ighten Leigh’s stubborn defence.
However, on 20 minutes, Nelly broke the deadlock with a great goal. The ball came to him 20 yards out and with a quick look up, he arrowed a stunning shot into the corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance.
The rest of the half saw Trawden plugging away and Ighten Leigh relying on breakaways, but no further goals were scored.
Half-time: Ighten Leigh 0-1 Celtic
Celtic attacked from the start of the second half and missed two great chances. They were made to pay 15 minutes in when Ighten Leigh equalised with a well taken goal.
The first cross was missed by the Celtic defence and when the ball came back in, the Ighten Leigh striker chested the ball down and smacked it past Simon Lewis, giving him no chance.
This seemed to spur Celtic into action and five minutes later they were back in front. Captain Callum Whitfield was surrounded by defenders but managed to get his shot in and it hit the back of the net.
26th November 2006 Ighten Leigh 1 - 3 Trawden Celtic
With ten minutes to go it was 3-1. Callum chased a high bouncing ball and managed
to get to it first to head it into the net. There was no way back for Ighten Leigh.
They tried hard, but Celtic managed to keep them out for a hard fought win.
With West End Athletic losing to Brunlea, Celtic went to the top of the table.
