A weakened Celtic team conceded a 95th minute equaliser to draw with League leaders West End Athletic
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Trawden Celtic Under 17’s were without James Parker and Calvin Anslow for this top-of-the-table clash.
This meant a change in formation with Phil Shaw partnering Rob Lawless in attack and Jamie Holmes moved to central defence with Chris Dodd switching to right back.
For the first 15 minutes, the changes seemed to affect Trawden as West End dominated and looked the more likely side to break the deadlock, but after soaking up the pressure, Celtic took the lead on 20 minutes. Top scorer Rob Lawless received a great through ball to outrun the West End defence and slot the ball past the keeper.
Simon Lewis in the Celtic goal was taking everything in his stride, producing some good saves from West End’s long range efforts and sweeping up any through balls. It was an unfortunate mistake however, that led to Athletic’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time.
He went down to gather a long ball but let it slip from his grasp and the West End striker slid the ball into the empty net.
Rob Lawless was becoming increasingly frustrated with West End’s offside tactics and was promptly booked for his complaints about numerous decisions.
Half-time: Celtic 1 - 1 West End Athletic
A bright start to the second half by Trawden saw them take the lead again on 48 minutes. Rob Lawless received the ball and hit a screamer from 20 yards which gave the West End keeper no chance.
Trawden were on the ascendency and brought on Jack Parker for his debut on the right wing. West End made sure he was covered by using two men to mark him, but this opened the game up a bit more and Celtic were unlucky not to make it 3-1 when they hit the post.
With 30 minutes to go, Celtic were reduced to ten men. Rob Lawless burst onto a through ball from his own half to round the West End keeper, who brought him down. Penalty? No. The linesman had flagged for offside against Rob who took exception to this and produced a verbal volley. It was a dubious decision, but the referee had no alternative but to book him for the second time and gave him his marching orders.
West End sniffed blood, but Celtic weren’t going to give up without a fight and defended superbly, with Athletic relying on long range efforts.
In the dying minutes Trawden nearly snatched another goal. The West End keeper had moved into the Trawden half and had a shot as his team searched for an equaliser. The ball was intercepted by Iain Ross who took aim from 60 yards out. The ball bounced and bounced and agonisingly rolled onto the post as the keeper raced back to claim it.
But in an unprecedented fifth minute of time added on, West End equalised. Simon Lewis got a hand to the West End striker’s shot but could not prevent it crossing the line.
Yet Celtic still had time to almost snatch a winner. A free kick by sub Tommy Gabaruex saw Callum Whitfield’s flick header tipped onto the post and cleared by the Athletic defence.
The whistle went and the points were shared in what was an enthralling match.
