Trawden Celtic, missing four regulars, came from 2-0 down to inflict the first defeat of the season on league leaders West End Athletic.
Calvin Anslow, Declan Pinder, Tommy Gaberaux and Thomas “Nelly” Ellacott, all usually on the subs’ bench, played a big part in the game and contributed to a superb performance.
Celtic took the game by the scruff of the neck from the very first minute, forcing West End onto the back foot. However, chances were created but missed, and Trawden paid dearly after 35 minutes. A cross from the left was stabbed into the net for West End to take the lead with their first shot on target.
Three minutes later it was 2-0. West End midfielder “Ash”, waltzed past three Celtic players and toe-poked the ball into the net from 20 yards. A great goal, almost “Gazza” like.
Would Trawden’s heads drop? On the contrary, they pushed up field again and the turning point of the match came a minute before half-time. Captain Callum Whitfield found some space 8 yards from goal and steered a shot towards the top corner, but a West End defender stopped the ball with his hands. Penalty? Red card? Neither. The ref, who had a good game, gave a goal and the offender stayed on the pitch. A good decision for all involved.
Celtic had their tails up as the half-time whistle blew.
Half-time: West End 2 - 1 Celtic
Trawden started the second half as they had the first, and they were level within five minutes. A corner from Iain Ross was headed in by Rob Lawless with the West End defence static. Ten minutes later, a mistake by the West End ‘keeper gifted Celtic the lead. His clearance struck Rob and bounced back towards the goal and Rob ran it home.
The next goal was crucial, and after twenty minutes of even play, Celtic made it 4-2. Nelly chased a long bouncing ball into the West End area. He got the better of the defender and poked the ball past the keeper from a tight angle.
That goal knocked the stuffing out of West End and with five minutes to go came the
goal of the match.
Iain Ross on the right wing, curled a great ball round the defence for Rob Lawless
to run on to and stroke the ball home for his hat-trick to make the score 5-2.
Nelly should have made it six, but he miscued in front of goal after some unselfish
work by Rob.
A great performance that sees Celtic back in the title race.
